According to a report by Reuters, member states of the European Union agreed at a summit in Brussels to take punitive action against Russia for its alleged role in a nerve agent attack in Salisbury, while Moscow accused the bloc of supporting a London-driven hate campaign against it.

Late on Thursday, the 28 member EU collectively condemned the attack on a former Russian spy and claimed that it was "highly likely" that Moscow had been behind the attack.

French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking alongside German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday, announced that Paris and Berlin would be among the countries taking further rapid and coordinated measures which other leaders said would include the expulsion of Russian officials, in addition to other potential retaliatory actions..
