C1 3 beautiful pieces of ceramic art that focuses on community and southern hospitality.
Joining us today is carvel norman, the owner of dirty south pottery.
Welcome to the show guest: carvel norman title: owner company: dirty south pottery dirty south pottery is art studio located in the historic downtown of winchester, ky - created and owned by husband-and-wife artist duo, carvel and ashley norman.
Our life and business stories both start with ceramics - we met at eastern kentucky university in 2011 while taking ceramic courses, married in 2013 and opened our pottery shop in 2015.
We are focused on the idea of community with southern culture & hospitality, while keeping in mind the art of everyday ceramics.
For nearly 2 years we self-renovated our 1908 building into our dream studio/store combination.
We remodeled the upstairs apartment, allowing us to live on- site and fully immerse ourselves into the downtown lifestyle.
Our spare time is spent contributing to the emerging art community on our block and volunteering with the main street winchester.
Tell us a bit about what you and your wife do, and how you all ended up in downtown winchester.
What can we expect to see when visiting your studio and store?
What would you consider your most c1 3 up in winchester was my wife wa born and raised in winchester family is still there.
I found out from glasco originally so don't close to bowling green gotcha but yes she's she's from there no one raised and whenever she wanted to move back in so we solve this.
Basically this initiative to bring a lot more our house into especially downtown winchester, specifically on n.
Where we are.
So we counsel this great idea the subtle arts district so yeah we really are reach for the opportunity to often people expect when they come into your's video what exactly can the to see the person you see one of you walk in is our storefront so we are a studio and store okay the first luck in neuronal retail shop and our building is 110 years old s we tried to maintain a lot of the history and really leave as many nods to what the building used to be as as possible, so there's lot i got it was most notably the winchester paint, wallpaper store so we have a lo of old wallpaper samples that we stand on the walls and so are studio is beyond that point.
So is a demonstration stage were usually on their work and we do that because will encourage people to come up ask questions you just work classes to the right will absolutely classes you we had 16 not and its basically a two hour class was one my class is typically the last friday of the month month and we really tried to show what the experience we want people to come in to try to try their hand out a date night or something like that is lucio come in yoga on the street got some pics in these beautiful pieces gorgeously you over on the right your and tom are on the will i mean do you focus on certain colors and then keep being all different pieces and how to decide what colors are going is basically destroying c1 3 is you as i you may is you so color means that you have the basically it concerns me going back into our glaze mixing our children just playin around and we see you know what's we tried a lot of different things that comes out to you what i like what my wife likes and then will put them out and we use of course were involved with the winchester into bones so kind and so that donation and so we do a lot of waste testing with those bowls that we that we donate such as a better idea of what is glaser really do look like once you start you are mass-producing exactly.
So we the really try to bring it down to be of of the main glaze combinations that we use this one on the kentucky is one of the main was that we will the purple love this purple this is about his enemy is you is really full.
I really like all gorgeous and you the different is that you make all these pieces and these other colors as well yes i all and i and him when find your work other than at your store do: not with these items. how does that work.
