New York AG sues to dissolve Trump Foundation

Just weeks after taking office, New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood unveiled a new lawsuit Thursday against President Donald Trump, his family members, and the Donald J.

Trump Foundation. In a court filing, Underwood accuses the Foundation of violating laws governing New York state charities and says her goal is to dissolve it entirely. Underwood ALSO charges that the Foundation illegally raised over 2.8 million dollars designed to influence the 2016 election, under the control of Trump's campaign. Also named in the lawsuit: Trump's children Ivanka, Eric, and Donald Junior, who have been members of the Foundation's board for years but whom Underwood charges FAILED to perform their required oversight duties.

Trump's charity drew scrutiny during the campaign when then-Attorney General Eric Schneiderman ordered it to stop fundraising, saying it had not properly registered with the state.

The Foundation later announced it would close its doors.

The Trump Foundation said in a statement the lawsuit was a "politics at its very worst." Trump himself unloaded on Twitter almost immediately, tying the case to Schneiderman, a Democrat, who resigned in disgrace in May after reports he physically abused romantic partners, saying the case was "ridiculous" and he would not settle it Underwood is seeking restitution payments, penalties against Trump himself, and a ban against him serving as an officer of a charity.
