Tropical Storm Gordon drenches south Florida

Strong winds and heavy rains lashed Florida on Monday, as Tropical Storm Gordon crossed the state's southern tip and into the Gulf of Mexico.

Forecasters say the storm is expected to drop as much as 8 inches of rain in some areas.

Winds reached 45 miles per hour and whipped up a storm surge along some beaches.

Though Gordon remains a tropical storm, forecasters believe it could strengthen to near hurricane strength during the next 36 to 48 hours.

Last year, hurricanes slammed Florida, Texas and Puerto Rico, causing thousands of deaths and hundreds of billions of dollars in damage.

The National Hurricane Center says Gordon is expected to reach the central Gulf Coast states of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana late on Tuesday.
