HOLLOWAY WEARING CROWN STORY: The world's top conker players came, saw and conquered on Sunday (October 14) at the World Conker Championships in the English village of Southwick.

The annual event brought more than 200 competitors to England's east Midlands as they battled wet weather for the men and women's titles.

Conkers are horse chestnuts which have a hole drilled through them and a shoelace passed through the hole.

Competitors take it in turns to have three strikes at rivals' conkers.

If they can cause their opponent's shoelace to become knotted three times, or the conker to break apart, they win.

It was Peterborough's Stuart Campbell who triumphed in the men's final and Karen Holloway from Derby who took the title in the women's competition.

Competitors were told to choose their conker from a shared selection to avoid age-old tactics of people soaking them in vinegar, leaving them in the dark for a year or putting them in the oven - all methods to harden the conkers up.
