Why Russia May Have Already Hacked the 2018 Midterms

Russian hackers who hacked into the DNC’s computers, ran social media disinformation campaigns, and attacked election management systems in 39 states during the 2016 presidential election may have their sights set on the 2018 midterms.????Election integrity advocacy group Verified Voting says 30% of America’s voting machines are outdated and unprotected, and some cybersecurity experts think Russian hackers may have already placed malware into voting machines across the country.????Experts say hackers may target voting machines in swing states like Pennsylvania with closely contested elections.????They could bribe elected officials or employees who have access to electronic voting machines to replace a computer chip that could be programmed to register a vote for the opposing candidate, or none at all.????A former US attorney turned cybercrime specialist told Newsweek: “This is an assault on our sovereignty.

Russia’s hacking architecture is already in place here.

The only question now is, What are we going to do about it?” ????Since paper ballot machines are more secure, Pennsylvania and 10 other states that rely heavily on electronic machines have secured nearly $400 million in federal funding to replace them, but they won’t be ready until the 2020 primaries.????
