China to Launch World's First 'Artificial Moon'

China to Launch World's First 'Artificial Moon' China's space industry is planning to put an artificial moon into orbit over the city of Chengdu by 2020.

The moon has a planned orbit of 310 miles above the earth.

Acting as a nightlight, the artificial moon would shine eight time brighter the earth's natural moon.

A special coating on the artificial moon It's estimated to save the city $174 million dollars a year in electricity costs.

The moon could also be used to illuminate disaster areas during blackouts.

If the artificial moon is successful, three more are planned for launch in 2022.
