Melbourne attacker inspired by IS: police

Australian police have named the man they believe carried out Friday's (November 9) attack in Melbourne, as 30-year-old Somalia-born - Hassan Khalif Shire Ali.

They say he was known to police, and that he was radicalized and inspired by Islamic State propaganda.

His Australian passport was cancelled in 2015, after an intelligence report that he planned to travel to Syria.

But an assessment was made that he posed no threat to national security, despite having radical views.

Shire Ali set fire to a pickup truck laden with gas cylinders in the center of Melbourne, shortly before evening rush hour on Friday - and stabbed three people - one of them fatally.

He was shot by police, and later died in the hospital.

Police say the attacker had driving, theft and cannabis offences.

And his links to the IS militant group didn't include direct contact.

On Saturday (November 10), police carried out raids in the Melbourne suburb of Meadow Heights, in connection with the attack.
