Russian cosmonauts inspect repair

ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Two Russian cosmonauts began a six and a half hour spacewalk on Tuesday to inspect and collect samples from a repair made to damaged Soyuz spacecraft in August.

The Russians were looking at the habitation module of the spacecraft where a hole was detected on August 29 after a loss of pressure was registered in the International Space Station.

No injuries were reported and the hole was immediately sealed.

NASA emphasized that Tuesday's spacewalk was not a repair mission, but rather a data collection and inspection exercise.

The cosmonauts had to cut away a layer of insulation and a layer of debris shield in the Soyuz module to look at the repaired hull.

The mission is intended to provide information that may help identify the cause of the leak and evaluate the effectiveness of the repair.
