We're expecting to learn more later this morning about a crash on new year's eve that killed a lake mills fire captain.
That crash happened on the beltline at around 7 on monday night ... near the monona drive exit.
Authorities say captain chris truman got out of his car to help someone else who crashed in the snowy conditions when he was hit by a suspected drunk driver.
That driver ... 28-year-old samuel cremers of columbus ... was arrested on suspicion of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle.
He's in the dane county jail this morning waiting for his first court appearance.
Meanwhile captain truman is being remembered as a hero this morning for potentially saving another life from being lost in that crash.
Our christina lorey joins us live from the lake mills fire department with those details.
Good morning susan and leah.
People who worked with captain truman at the ace hardware store here in town say he was always willing to help people -- no matter the situation.
So it makes sense he would stop at the side of the road to help someone who crashed following monday night's snow storm... and the lake mills fire department says he likely helped save a life that night.
They posted a message from the family of the woman who captain truman stopped to help.
They say she got out of her car after skidding and losing control of her car on the snowy roads.
Captain truman pulled up and told her to get back in her car ... before walking up to her car window and telling her he'd follow her to safety.
That's when the suspected drunk driver hit truman.
He later died at the hospital from his injuries.
The family of the woman says their hearts are in pain for captain truman's family ... but they wanted them to know that he will forever be their angel.
City officials are expected to provide more information about captain truman and the crash a little later this morning.
We'll bring you those details as they come in on air and over at channel 3- thousand dot com.
