It out for outright first place in the league as aridondack square off with holland patent.
Spencer but first - time for tonight's big game...it's hockey night in new hartford as an old rivalry is renewed between the spartans and whitesboro warriors at the rec center.
These two teams have battled back and forth for years - who's turn is it tonight?
--- alicia after a scoreless first - the lamp is lit in the second.
Opening up the scoring is andy hay-dis who rips it top corner where momma hides the cookies.
Warriors take the lead.
--- spencer four minutes later - fresh off a penalty kill - whitesboro now even strength - hopping onto the ice is andrew maycock who gets the stretch pass from noah scranton - comes in alone and buries it.a little what's up to his student section and the warriors are up two.
--- alicia a minute after the boro scored its third goal - they pot another.
Scranton up the wing - the beautiful back door feed for troy chamberlain and he wastes no time putting it home.
Warriors end the second frame up four.
--- spencer the momentum carried into the third - it's 6-0 warriors now.
How's this for a showstopper?
Hay-dis and a little of that.
The senior with a gorgeous individual effort for his second of the night... ...that capped off a big one for whitesboro who invades enemy territory and takes over with a 7-0 win.
Spencer hello everyone and welcome to sports express.
Impressive showing by the warriors.
From the ice to the basketball court - we had a full slate of girls basketball games around the mohawk valley.
We'll start with a c-s-c one showdown between adirondack and holland patent.
Both teams entered the contest 3-0 in league play.
Spencer opening frame - the wildcats cap off a 8-0 run as camille roberts drains the three point shot from the wing.
Alicia the golden knights would come storming back - makenna reinold knocks it down from beyond the arc - holland patent within one.
Spencer second quarter - adirondack up by eight - cassidy kotary inbounds the ball - then heads to the corner where she'll get the rock back - and nothing but net.
Knights trail 19-14.
Alicia time winding down in the half -hannah miller has her shot blocked - gets it back - finds roberts same spot as before - money!
This one would need extra time to determine a winner - adriondack defeats holland patent 59-54 in overtime.
Spencer in whitesboro - the warriors hosted the 10-1 vvs red devils in a non- league contest.
Early in the first - great ball movement by the warriors.
Kiley snow gets it down low to kelsey wands - she slides by her defender - and finshes with the reverse layup - boro up 4-zip.
Alicia right back down the other way - alexa kiser is a lefty and uses that to her advantage.
The outlet pass is ahead of the defense - kiser puts it on the floor and kisses it off the glass.
Red devils on the board.
Spencer but the big bad wrecking crew showed up ready to play.
Hannah scott weaves through traffic all the way to the rim.
They led by as many as 20 in the first half.
The warriors dominated the red devils on both ends - 45-24 is your final.
Alicia over in sauquouit - indians senior allison moreau was 25 points away from the 2000th career point mark and she only needed three quarters to do it!
Congrats allison on another incredible milestone.
Spencer celebration - check.
Now down to business.
4th quarter - frankfort- schuyler trailing by two - charlotte rodio comes up with the steal - throws it up and banks it home to knot things up at 42.
Alicia a few minutes later - maria luther's shot is tipped - right into the hands of eva arquiett - she gets the tough shot to go - frankfort back on top by one.
Spencer but after scoring her 2000th career point - moreau wasn't done.
Tied at 48 - indians in transition - she spins out of a triple team - count the layup and the foul.sauquoit with a three point edge.
With less than a minute to go - moreau drains the dagger- she finished with 37 points as the indians edge frankfort scuyler 54-48.
Alicia in the csc - two - it was a battle between west canada valley and herkimer on the hardwood.
--- first quarter - alana ferri driving baseline - despite the contact - gets the friendly bounce plus the whistle.
The three point play puts the magicians within three.
Spencer ferri gets trapped - throws it away to jordyn conte - she takes it coast to coast - posts up her defender - and banks in the layup.
Indians on top 9-8.
Alicia but a few minutes later - ferri would return the favor as she picks conte's pocket - takes it the length of the court - for the easy two.
Spencer conte adding to west canada's lead in the second frame - conte stops squares up and nails it from the behind the line.
A big league win for west canada valley as the indians defeat herkimer 47-36.
That sends us into the locker room after the first period - but don't go anywhere.
Coming up next... we introduce you to our first athlete of the week of 2019.
...but first - let's check out other scores from around the area in our sports express scoremaster.
Bumpback & athlete of the week stinger he was a star on a section title winning football team - and now - he's trying to lead his basketball team to the same feat.
Josh ernst of the holland patent boys basketball team is a one-man scoring machine.
He currently leads the golden knights in offensive production with just under 24 points per game and has been on a tear of late - averaging nearly 28 points in the last five contests.
Last week - ernst went off for a career-high 43 points against waterville and followed it up with a 15 point performance the next day against v-v-s - leading h-p to the v-v-s holiday tournament championship.
Being a very tall guard allows him to see certain lanes on the court others may not be able to see.
He said that while he enjoys being able to contribute night in and night out - playing a sport he loves with teammates he loves is what makes it truly special.
Josh ernst: it's really an unreal feeling i'm just glad that i get to play with all of my best friends and just to be out there with all of them means the world to me.
I can shoot a little bit, but i really don't.
I like to attack the basket, i usually just catch it on the wing and go to the basket and try to finish.
Obviously my length because i'm 6'4" and i can jump higher than most people and for how tall i am and how long i am pretty quick so it allows me to attack the basket.
Kirk smith: he was voted captain by his teammates, his teammates really look up to him you know he's a leader with the way that he plays on the court and a lot of people look at how he shows up on game day and what he brings to the table.
There's been some games like, i think the canastota game where we were playing really bad, really poorly and he brought a lot of energy on our run that we made.
At halftime i think he had 16 points and our team had 22 you know we are playing awful and we were like how did josh -- sometimes it's just like he's just there to get the points for us when we need him the most.
A lot of our offense is predicated on getting the ball out and just getting into open space, and i don't think there is anyone who can stop him, even if they have two defenders back and he gets the ball at half court if he has to beat two guys to the hoop he's quick enough off the dribble to get around them, but he's so smooth going in either direction he can really elevate finish at the rim really well if you know of a high school athlete who deserves to be athlete of the week, here's our contact info - call, email, even hit us up on social media!
If you're a coach, a-d, parent, even a teammate - just send us who you would like to be nominated and why.
Give us some stats and a story and we'll give you a shot!
All featured athletes receive a plaque courtesy of c-n-y awards and apparel.
That'll bring us to second intermission here on sports express.
Still more to come your way.
After the break - we will head back to the ice... ...the utica college pioneers return from winter break to host skidmore at the aud.
Men's ice hockey - as they returned to the ice tonight to face skidmore.
The pioneers ended 2018 winning four straight - they look to kick off the rust in a non- conference contest.
Spencer hoping right into this one - second period - u-c down one.
J-t entelisano takes the shot - shoulder save by brian kowalski - but putting home the rebound and tying up the game is jarrod fitzpatrick.
--- alicia nearly seven minutes go by with the teams deadlocked at one - but that all ends with entelisano - who gets the pass in the slot and rips it off the post and in - the rome native having himself a night.
--- spencer in the third - it's 3-1 u-c now.
The local boys doin' work for the pioneers as joey rutkowski - also of rome stuffs it five-hole on kowalski... ...utica scores five unanswered goals in the last two frames as they win their fifth straight - 5-1.
Alicia as expected - goalie thatcher demko was recalled by the vancouver canucks today - seemingly for good - and possibly ending his tenure with the utica comets.
The move comes after the big club dealt goalie anders nilsson to the ottawa senators along with darren archibald on wednesday.
Spencer the canucks got goalie mike mckenna in return - but he was claimed by the philadelphia flyers today before he could be sent to utica - and so the comets were forced to sign alex sac-el-er-op-oh- lous to a p-t-o to back up ivan kulbakov in tomorrow's game against the cleveland monsters.
If this indeed is the end of demko's tenure with the comets - he certainly left his mark in utica.
In 107 career games over three seasons - demko posted a record of 55- 35-12 - along with a 2.56 goals against average and .915 save percentage.
He is the franchises all time leader in both single-season and career wins.
