Kxly 4's ariana lake joins us with the latest on the investigation- the university sent out an email friday-- that a student just shared with us-- telling students and staff about what happened.
Gonzaga wouldn't do an interview with us--but i talked to students here who say--they weren't surprised to hear about an assault on campus.
According to the email--sent out to gonzaga students and staff--the sexual assault reportedly happened late saturday--january 19--or early sunday --on january 20th.
That email said the victim knew the attacker.
Students we spoke with say--gonzaga always alerts them to incidents like this.
34:26"they email us whenever it happens..baughmani think if the school knows, we know," Sanskruti tomarthe university is required by the federal clery act to collect and publish statistics about crimes that occur on and around campus.according to g- u's latest report--seven rapes were reported in campus housing in 2015--two instances in 2016--and two in 20-17.
During that same time--g-u reported 14 cases of fondling, 10 instances of dating violence, seven cases of on-campus stalking, and four instances of domestic violence.
Some students worry the actual number of these crimes is higher--because some victims don't report the attacks.
33:40"that's kind of the culture.
I've heard it's worse at other schools.
I feel like our school isn't nearly as bad as like my friends at other public schools.
But it's definitely part of the culture of excusing the behavior," Olivia baughman that's why some students are taking their own steps to stay safe.
34:59 "i'm trying to get a few of my friends to join the self defense class that campus offers, too," Tomar33:56"we have friends who have pepper spray.
We walk with them, make sure we watch what we wear and stuff, keep our keys in hand," Baughmangonzaga said in the email-- the university has no tolerance for any kind of sexual abuse or misconduct--and they have resources and support for students who'v been sexually assaulted, abused, stalked, or harassed.
