Vatican Investigator Says McCarrick Defrocking Shows 'Bishops Not Above The Law'
According to a report by Reuters, on Saturday, the Vatican's top sexual crimes investigator said that the defrocking of former US cardinal Theodore McCarrick is a 'very important signal' to the Catholic Church hierarchy that no one is a law, despite decades of scandals and subsequent cover-ups.
McCarrick was expelled from the priesthood after being found guilty of sexual crimes against minors and adults.
Archbishop Charles Scicluna said, "There is also a very important signal for us bishops that we are not above the law ... we should be judged according to the highest standards." Reuters reports that the McCarrick ruling was announced ahead of next week’s meeting at the Vatican between the heads of national Catholic Churches and Vatican officials on the global abuse crisis.
