Chicago PD Launches Internal Investigation Over Alleged False Leaks in Jussie Smollett Case

The Chicago Police Department has opened another investigation into the Jussie Smollett case, but the scope of this one will be internal.????Citing information about the case allegedly being leaked to media, the department announced an internal investigation.????Sergeant Rocco Alioto from the department’s office of communications said “I would like to point out that a lot of the information out there was inaccurate and there were numerous agencies involved in this investigation”????Smollett first reported a racial and homophobic fueled attack before it was revealed that he allegedly hired two associates to stage the incident.????Police arrested and charged the actor with a felony of disorderly conduct for filing a false police report.????Smollett was released after posting bail and has maintains his innocence.

His next scheduled court appearance is March 14th.????The launch of the Chicago PD internal investigation takes place after NBC 5 in Chicago reports that at least 50 Northwestern Memorial Hospital staff members were fired for viewing Smollett’s medical records; a violation of the HIPAA which protects patient privacy.????Smollett was briefly hospitalized at that facility following the attack.????A spokesperson for Northwestern would not comment to NBC 5 due to HIPAA restrictions.
