More prison time for Ex-Trump aide Manafort

A federal judge in Washington on Wednesday boosted Paul Manafort's prison time, bringing it to a total of 7.5 years for a range of crimes.

It nearly doubles the sentence imposed by another judge almost a week ago.

Saying that Manafort, quote, "knew exactly what he was doing," Judge Amy Berman Jackson imposed a 73-month sentence for two counts of conspiracy and witness tampering Manafort admitted to last year.

During the sentencing, Manafort apologized to the court, saying, quote, "I am sorry for what I've done." He asked for leniency, but Jackson shot him down.

She said, "Saying 'I'm sorry I got caught' is not an inspiring plea for leniency." Jackson said some of her sentence would run concurrently with the 47 months a Virginia judge gave Manafort last week for 8 counts of tax and bank fraud in a separate case, with the rest to be served consecutively.

Both cases are tied to Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe, but relate to Manafort's lobbying work in Ukraine before joining Trump's campaign.

Manafort's lawyer Kevin Downing slammed the sentence as an unjustified punishment of his client.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) KEVIN DOWNING, MANAFORT'S LAWYER, SAYING: "I think the judge showed that she is incredibly hostile to Mr. Manafort and exhibited a level of callousness that I have not seen in a white collar case that I have not seen in over 15 years of prosecution." His D.C.

Case became more complicated after Jackson ruled last month that Manafort had violated a cooperation agreement with Mueller by repeatedly lying to prosecutors and the grand jury.

The sentencing in Virginia and Washington cap a stunning downfall for the veteran Washington lobbyist, who was found guilty of evading taxes on some $16 million dollars in earnings and lying to banks to finance an opulent lifestyle.
