In a stinging rebuke to President Donald Trump… The Republican-controlled Senate on Thursday VOTED TO REJECT Trump's declaration of a national emergency on the southern border.
REPUBLICAN MIKE LEE SOT 12 Republicans joined Democrats to oppose Trump's emergency order aimed at building his signature wall with Mexico… after the House of Representatives did the same last month … Trump issued the order in February at the end of a bruising 35-day federal shutdown..
After Congress rejected his $5.7 billion demand for the wall.
Trump hoped to use his emergency powers to build the wall with funds that would otherwise go to the military… citing what he called an invasion of migrants and illegal drugs.
DEMOCRAT CHUCK SCHUMER SOT But many of his own Republicans balked at the idea from the start… saying the move trampled on the separation of powers embedded in the Constitution… and saying a president with a liberal agenda could someday turn the tables….
Even before the vote..on Thursday Trump was refusing to back down …saying he's ready to break out his VETO PEN for the first time in his presidency… Congress was not expected to have the votes to override that veto...but the emergency order is likely to face a long court battle.
The Senate's rejection of the emergency order marked the SECOND time they have defied Trump in just two days… On Wednesday - against Trump's wishes -- the chamber approved a resolution to end U.S. support for Saudi Arabia's war in Yemen… And as Special Counsel Robert Mueller gets ready to wrap up his probe into Russian meddling and whether the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow… Republicans in the House, also showed their independence Thursday… joining Democrats in a 420 to 0 vote calling on the Justice Department to make Mueller's final report fully available to Congress AND the American public.
