NZ foreign minister headed to Turkey to "confront" Erdogan's mosque shooting comments

(ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION) New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Wednesday (March 20) Foreign Minister Winston Peters will travel to Turkey to "confront" comments made by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on the killing of at least 50 people at mosques in Christchurch.

Australian Brenton Tarrant, 28, a suspected white supremacist, was charged with murder on Saturday (March 16) after a lone gunman opened fire at the two mosques during Friday prayers.

Erdogan - who is seeking to drum up support for his Islamist-rooted AK Party in March 31 local elections - said Turkey would make the suspected attacker pay if New Zealand did not.

During a news conference held after meeting with first responder paramedics, Ardern said that Peters will "set things right" during his visit to Turkey, and that Turkey had sent a delegation to New Zealand as a show of solidarity just after the attacks.

Ardern also said the bodies of 30 victims had been approved for release to be reunited with their families.

Burials began on Wednesday morning amid frustration over the delay as under Islam bodies are usually buried within 24 hours.
