Australian PM happy with 'moderation' of Turkey's Christchurch comments

(ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION) Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison welcomed the moderation of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's comments on Thursday (March 21) made following the New Zealand shootings.

Erdogan - who is seeking to drum up support for his Islamist-rooted AK Party in March 31 local elections - threatened to send back "in caskets" any Australian or New Zealander who tried to take the battle to Istanbul and that they would make the suspected attacker pay if New Zealand did not.

Erdogan then wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post on Wednesday (March 20), where he praised Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern for her leadership.

Morrison said he was confident they will be able to resolve the issues caused by these comments "in the best interests" of the "wonderful relationship" between Turkey and Australia.

Morrison also confirmed he was in discussions with New Zealand and Japanese prime ministers regarding the responsibility of social media companies and the content posted on their platforms ahead of the G20 summit in June.
