Pelosi Announces Lawsuit To Block Trump's Border Wall
Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on Thursday that the House will file a lawsuit to block President Donald Trump's declaration of a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border.
The Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group voted 3-2 to authorize the lawsuit on behalf of House Democrats after they failed to meet the necessary two-thirds threshold to override the President's veto.
The lawsuit will argue that Trump's allocation of funding for the wall violates the Appropriations Clause of the Constitution, which gives Congress the power to designate federal spending.
Pelosi released a statement saying "The House will once again defend our democracy and our Constitution, this time in the courts." In addition to the House lawsuit, the emergency declaration faces seven other legal challenges from states, environmental groups and nonprofit organizations.
