83-year-old Extinction Rebellion Protester Helped From Roof of Train

A man, reported to be in his eighties, was among the Extinction Rebellion protesters who climbed on top of a train at Canary Wharf DLR station in London on April 25 as part of the group’s two-week action against government inaction on climate change.

The Guardian named him as 83-year-old Phil Kingston.

He had earlier been filmed eating a sandwich while on top of the train.

According to the Bristol Post, Kingston used to be a lecturer at the University of Bristol and is part of a group called Christian Climate Action.

The paper reported in 2018 about Kingston’s unsuccessful attempts to get himself arrested by lying down on a road outside the Houses of Parliament at Westminster.

It appears the police were reluctant to detain him on that occasion because of his age.

Christian Climate Action quoted him as saying: “I take action for my grandchildren.

I love them so much & it breaks my heart the thought of the world we are leaving them.” He has also been linked on Facebook to a group called Grandparents for a Safe Earth.

The Extinction Rebellion protests began on Monday, 15 April, with supporters taking part across Europe, North America and Australia.
