'This is a tragic day' - North Carolina governor says of university shooting
(ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION) A gunman reported to have been a student opened fire in a building at the University of North Carolina's Charlotte campus on Tuesday (April 30), killing two people and wounding four others, three of them critically.
"This is a tragic day at this great university, the city of Charlotte, and the state of North Carolina," said state governor Roy Cooper.
"Here, on the last day of class, just a few days to graduation, but I know the people in this community, and they will be here for each other." Local media have identified the man as 22-year old Trystan Terrell.
Police were seen escorting Terrell into custody.
Official details of the shooting remained unclear, but campus Police Chief Jeff Baker said emergency dispatch received a call late in the afternoon about an individual armed with a pistol who had shot several students.
Two or three campus police officers responding to the call entered the building, disarmed the suspect and took the individual into custody.
