Pressure on May mounts as party slumps in poll

Pressure is growing for British Prime Minister Theresa May to step down, as polling showed her Conservative party falling to fifth place in upcoming European elections.

The YouGov poll put Nigel Farage's Brexit Party in the lead on 34%, with the Conservatives trailing on just 10%.

The results have galvanized calls for May to set her own exit date.

Reuters correspondent Andrew MacAskill has been following the story.

SOUNDBITE (English) REUTERS CORRESPONDENT ANDREW MACASKILL, saying: "At the moment the prime minister is in office but not in power.

She's unable to drive any meaningful agenda at the moment.

We're almost certainly in the last few months or even weeks of her premiership (...) The Brexit party is soaking up a lot of support as a protest vote out of the fact that we haven't delivered Brexit.

It's less clear at the moment whether they would be able to deliver that level of support in a general election." The EU elections will be held on May 23rd.

While the British public has been largely apathetic to them in the past, Brexit - which has a new deadline of October - has cast the event in a whole new light.

SOUNDBITE (English) REUTERS CORRESPONDENT ANDREW MACASKILL, SAYING: "Usually in Britain, most people don't really pay attention to the European elections.

I don't think most people would be able to tell you who their member of European parliament is.

But this time it's completely different.

It's a very galvanized campaign and the government's probably going to get a real kicking.

So really what we're seeing at the moment, we're going to have a massive protest vote and in some ways it's turned into a mini-referendum on EU membership." Talks are ongoing between the government and opposition to try and break the deadlock in parliament over May's Brexit deal.

Meanwhile, the buzzards are circling.

Senior Conservatives want May to set out her plans this week and the chairman of the 1922 Committee, which can make or break Conservative party leaders, said the prime minister has been asked to give "clarity" about her future.
