A federal judge temporarily blocks mississippi's heart beat bill.

Thank you for joining us tonight..

That bill was set to take effect july first..

The heart beat bill bans most abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected.

U-s district judge carlton reeves issued an order today, to stop the law from going into effect..

Mississippi is one of several states pushing to enact bans on early abortions.

Some mississippians may get the chance to vote in the upcoming statewide elections at a younger age than you might guess.

Courtney ann jackson explains how one group is working to engage those young voters.

When you think about the ages when certain things become legal---you likely associate voting with age 18.

But did you know that in mississippi---as long as you'll be 18 by the general election---you can vote in the primaries at 17.

"that's huge, right?

I think we went into one of the high schools earlier last month and talked with a group of juniors.

And they were like, you mean to tell me if i register to vote, i can vote in the primary election this year.

And some of them that had already turned 18 as seniors talked about i could've voted in the midterms last year and didn't know it."

That's areika bennett---the executive director at mississippi votes.

Through her work---she's finding that young people are more ready to cast a ballot than you may think.

"what i found was, in talking to young people...because people don't do that...is literally all they need is information and resources.

Because they are more politically astute than some of us are."

Mississippi votes hosted voter registration drives last year and they'll continuing registering folks to vote.

But the focus this year is also on education.

"what we know is that people know whose name is on the ballot but we don't know what they stand for."

The organization has created fellowships and ambassador programs to better engage that young voting demographic.

"it's not that young people don't want to get involved.

It's that there are limited opportunities to do so."

July 8th is the deadline to register to vote if you'd like to vote in the statewide primaries on august 6.

Courtney ann jackson, wcbi news take developing story stinger new developments today in the case of a former oxford police officer accused of murder..

Layfayette county circuit court judge john gregory denied bond for matthew kinne, who was arrested monday.

Kinne is charged with murder in the death of dominique clayton.

Clayton was found shot to death in her home sunday..

The city of oxford has since fired kinne..

Clayton's family hired attorney carlos moore to look into her death..

Moore says he is conducting an independent investigation..

Kinne is being represented by attorney tony farese.

Farese says he has met with kinne at the panola county jail..

He says his client is presumed innocent until proven guilty and is encouraging people to wait for the evidence before making any judgments.

Farese is also opening his own investigation..

"we want justice .... "i would encourage people to pray for the clayton family, and to give everyone time to mourn, it's traumatic for everyone involved, including my client's family.

Oxford is a wonderful city , wonderful place, this is a very unfortunate situation and we will proceed accordingly."

A preliminary hearing could be next, if kinne requests one.

Farese says he expects the case to go before the next grand jury.

First look stinger first look friday night: clear, calm, and quiet.

Lows in the upper 60s to around 70?.

Saturday-tuesday: look for mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies each day.

Daytime highs should be generally in the mid 90s with overnight lows around 70?.

While a stray shower can never be ruled out in this kind of weather pattern we don't expect any issues at this time.

Be sure to find a cool spot during the heating of the day with heat indices peaking in the mid to upper 90s.

Folks are fueling up for trips this memorial day holiday weekend.

Right now, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in mississippi and alabama is two dollars 45 cents.

That's down about 20 cents from this time last year.

It's unclear if that's having a travel impact locally.

Many we talked to today say they'll be spending the holiday near home.

"i plan to just relax eat some good food and spend time with my family."

"my plans for memorial day is working that's all i'm gonna be doing."

"i'm going to be on a diet so i can be slim and trim for my wife" "my plans for memorial day is barbecue play basketball and hang out with my friends."

"well it's my anniversary today so we're going out to eat tomorrow and then my daughter who's over there she's graduating so and it's my fafamily reunion."

"we do a lot of cooking.

We always cook on memorial day.

We might do some chicken hotdogs smoked sausage baked beans tater salad and slaw... any kind of stuff like that."

"my plans is to enjoy family, grilling, and maybe go out of town just have fun" triple - a says the highest gas prices in our viewing area are in noxubee county.

The lowest can be found in prentiss county.

Memorial day weekend also means more motorcyclists are hitting the streets.

A nationwide study by quote wizard says mississippi has been the most dangerous state for bikers.

The study found that in 20-17 40 motorcyclists died in mississippi accidents.

Cbs affiliate wjtv talks to riders about how this can be fixed.

Not only a way of transportation, motorcycles are lifestyles, and livelihoods but sometimes not respected on the road.

"motorists aren't looking for motorcycles to be using the roadway.

People are looking for a large vehicle and they wound up taking a quick glance change lanes and they're directly on top of a motorcycle."

And all it takes is one simple tap by a car to a bike and the cost can be deadly.

"if you merge over in a motorcycles lane and bump that motorcycle in any kind of way, it can send it off the road and cause a very serious accident."

The study found for every 10,000 registered bikers in the state of mississippi nearly 15 died from being hit on the road.

So motorcyclists urge the public even behind these handlebars is also a life.

"they do have different features in vehicles now with side scanners and stuff but it doesn't always pick up a motorcycle.

You always have to do a head check before changing a lane no matter what vehicle it is."

"the bikers use hand signs they're are several hand signs for bikers to use.

If they're getting over, if they're getting ready to turn we're hoping the community and car drivers will start learning those signs as well."

Local motorcyclist keith ferguson knows the reality of these harsh stats all too well after being hit while riding.

It took him four months just to walk again.

"i was t-boned by a car riding to orlando.

I had a fractured femur, and tibia, a c2 and c6 fracture and head trauma and a broken wrist."

The bikers also say the common space you should keep between your bike and a car is a five second time frame and as always on the road put down the cell phone.

Stinger but it will be good for any outdoor activity you may have planned.

Not sizeable rain chance exists until the middle to end of next week.

Wednesday-friday: the extreme heat should back off just a little bit as a weak cold front approaches.

Highs will likely still be around 90?

Or into the lower 90s.

We're going to add a 20% chance of a shower or storm during this period but keep in mind cold fronts have a difficult time making their way this far south during the summer months.

Welcome back..

Kendrell daniels is a man of few words, but what he puts down on canvas speaks volumes..

I don't really get out and do stuff so."

His canvas allows him to be himself... " some stuff doesn't have to be perfect, you just put what you feel."

All artists have their own perspective..

Kendrell has his own technique.

Using his feet instead of his hands... " i don't really look at it liki have a disability, i just do it" kendrell developed his passion for painting at mississippi state's t.k martin center..

But he admits it wasn't love at first sight..

" when i first came i really didn't, it looked hard and i kid of did not like it, but when i started coming back here i loved it."

The 19 year old says he likes painting motivational quotes...animals...and anything sports-related..

His art has helped him develop a relationship with nfl quarterback dak prescott.

" i painted for him a couple of summers ago."

Kendrell's work inspired a pair of cleats prescott wore this past season.

" on one side of his shoe i did "adversity and strength."

I did the breast cancer sign because his mom died of colon cancer, and the other shoe was all of the names of other painters that paint here."

The quiet, soft-spoken kendrell has now blossomed into an inspirational figure... he says he will continue to use his artwork, his story, and his perseverance as motivation for people all across the world... " a lot of people walk up to me and tell me they know me, and they asked for my paintings on my social media and stuff like that.

People tell me i inspire them.some people do need motivation.

It's motivation for me for people to say i inspire them so it kind of goes both ways."

Take vo in monitor kendrell is a sophomore at east mississippi community college.

From there, he wants to attend msu and major in graphic design.

There's been times where we just get shutout and lose or we lose a good game.

We've been able to hang in there not just to be able to do what you said but to get a timely hit like thomas did today and to keep the game in tact on the mound defensively to where you have that opportunity."

" he might have the best fastball in the country.

He has electric stuff and he's blown it by me a few times in college.

If anything i was gonna pull it into their dugout i wasn't going to be late.

He ended up throwing one under the zone and with the ride on his fastball when the spin is up its really really good so luckily i got a pitch down and happy to put a good swing on it."

Ole miss advances to the semifinals and will be playing georiga tomorrow early afternoon but how about those diamond dawgs..

Its very rewarding, a lot of people supporting me and i've come a long way this far.

It's great.

Every match is so hard.

I could have lost to anyone on this tournament and vice versa.

So i just try and take it one match at a time.

Know my opponent as much as i can and apply the game plan and i've been successful that way and that's how i intend to keep going."
