North Korea's former spymaster reappears after 'forced labor' reports

North Korea's state news agency KCNA released a still photograph Monday of former top nuclear envoy Kim Yong Chol with leader Kim Jong Un at an art performance, signaling that the former spymaster remains a force in North Korea's power structure.

North Korea's former spymaster reappears after 'forced labor' reports

North Korea's former top nuclear envoy, Kim Yong Chol, pictured here on the far right, still seemingly a part of the country's power structure.

Last week a South Korean newspaper reported that the former spymaster had been sent to a labor and re-education camp following the failed US-North Korea summit in Vietnam earlier this year.

But State news agency KCNA released these photos Monday of leader Kim Jong Un an art performance Sunday, accompanied by Kim Yong Chol.

The appearance jars with reports of a shake up in the team that led engagement with the United States, including Yong Chol who met up with US secretary of state Mike Pompeo in the run up to the summit.

Some officials who worked with Yong Chol have been out of the public eye ever since the meeting.

A South Korean newspaper claimed Friday that Pyongyang had executed its nuclear envoy to the US as part of a purge of officials who steered negotiations.
