UK PM contender Gove admits past cocaine use

Michael Gove, a favorite to become the UK's next prime minister, has admitted to taking cocaine as a younger man more than 20 years ago.

Britain's environment minister told The Daily Mail newspaper that he regretted taking the narcotic back then at social gatherings.

Gove was quoted as saying "it was a mistake" but he didn't believe past mistakes should disqualify him from the Conservative leadership race.

Prime Minister Theresa May officially stepped down from her role as party leader on Friday (7 June), although she'll remain in Downing Street until her successor is picked.

And, Gove is one of 11 party members intending to replace her.

Gove is certainly not the first politician to admit to trying drugs in the past, including some other candidates running.

One of them, Dominic Raab - who has previously admitted to smoking marijuana - told the BBC that Gove's actions were a long time ago and that he believed in a, quote, "second chance society."
