Priest: in the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy spirit.

Congregation: amen.

Priest: the lord be della justin's opener hearts to god.

Lord jesus 's spirit renews the mercy.of the earth.

Christ jesus you spirit removes and forgives our sins.

Christ have mercy.

Christ have mercy.

Lord jesus spirit makes us witnesses to the gospel lord have mercy.

Lord have mercy.

Mayor marty got a mercy on us forgive us from our sins a still life everlasting.

Highest, and on earth peace to people of good will.

We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory.

Lord god, heavenly king, o god, almighty father.

Lord jesus christ, only begotten son, lord god, lamb of god, son of the father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the father, have mercy on us.

For you alone are the holy one, you alone are the lord, you alone are the most high, jesus christ, with the holy spirit, in the glory of god the father.

Amen.

Let us pray.

Oh god who by the mystery of today's great feast sanctifier whole church in every people and nation.

Pour out we pray the gifts of the holy spirit.

Across the face of the earth.

And with the divine grace that was at work when the gospel was first proclaimed phil now once more the hearts of all believers.

Through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever.

Amen.

A reading from the acts of the apostles.

When the time for pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together.

And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were.

Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them.

And they were all filled with the holy spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the spirit enabled them to proclaim.

Now there were devout jews from every nation under heaven staying in jerusalem.

At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language.

They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, "are not all these people who are speaking galileans?

Then how does each of us hear them in his native language?

We are parthians, medes, and elamites, inhabitants of mesopotamia, judea and cappadocia, pontus and asia, phrygia and pamphylia, egypt and the districts of libya near cyrene, as well as travelers from rome, both jews and converts to judaism, cretans and arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of god."

The word of the lord.

Lord.

Priest: thanks be to god.

Lord, send out your spirit, and renew the face of the earth.

Lord, send out your spirit, and renew the face of the earth.

Bless the lord, o my soul!

O lord, my god, you are great indeed!

How manifold are your works, o lord!

The earth is full of your creatures; lord, send out your spirit, and renew the face of the earth.

May the glory of the lord endure forever; may the lord be glad in his works!

Pleasing to him be my theme; i will be glad in the lord.

Lord, send out your spirit, and renew the face of the earth.

If you take away their breath, they perish and return to their dust.

When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.

Lord, send out your spirit, and renew the face of the earth.

Second reading a reading from the letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters: no one can say, "jesus is lord," except by the holy spirit.

There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same spirit; there are different forms of service but the same lord; there are different workings but the same god who produces all of them in everyone.

To each individual the manifestation of the spirit is given for some benefit.

As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also christ.

For in one spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether jews or greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one spirit.

The word of the lord.

Priest: thanks be to god.

Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of alleluia priest: the lord be with you.

Congregation: and with your spirit.

Priest: a reading from the holy gospel according to john.

Congregation: glory to you, o lord.

Priest: on the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the jews, jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, "peace be with you."

When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side.

The disciples rejoiced when they saw the lord.

Jesus said to them again, "peace be with you.

As the father has sent me, so i send you."

And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "receive the holy spirit.

Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained."

The gospel of the lord.

Congregation: praise to you, lord jesus christ.

Blessed pentecost sunday as we come to the culmination of this wonderful easter season.

Remind of the sum the origins the roots of our celebration of pentecost.

That the greek word pentecost really means 50th.

In the early days of the church it referred to the entire 50 days of easter season.

Starting with the resurrection of the lord.

And also it is an ancient part of the feast of the jewish religion and tradition.

It was called the feast of weeks a celebration of the early days of the harvest and ways to give great gratitude and praise to god for the gift of that harvest.

Eventually it also celebrated among the jewish people as to giving of the torah.

The law to moses on mount sinai.

So was in the early church the only christians who interpreted as a commemoration then of the coming of the holy spirit.

And again what we call today in our culture the birthday of the church, the beginnings of the very church that you and i are part of as a body of christ.

Through our baptism.

And so we do well we hear over and again in the readings and scriptures especially the acts and the apostles during the easter season, that the early christians knew that jesus and his spirit are always with them.

They had to go into that understanding and deepen their faith in that reality.

And it was that conviction of the very presence of the lord in the spirit that really it sustains them and empowered them to in many ways to unimaginable kinds of things.

To be bearers of the very goodness the good news of jesus christ risen from the dead.

To bring his presence and to begin to spread the news through the whole known world among jewish people as well as then to the gentiles to the non-jewish people.

And so we know from any accounts that the kind of courage that they face and the difficulties they faced because of the only people accepting but those who rejected and ultimately many of them facing martyrdom being put to death for their convictions.

Of jesus christ risen from the dead.

And so this wonderful gospel that we just heard this morning is that recounts at first encounter that they had with jesus after the resurrection and they were met with this gift of forgiveness and is gift of peace.

And that statement saying again and again peace be with you.

Meeting them in a time of great confusion and fear because it was right after the events of the crucifixion and holy week and with easter sunday the resurrection that not really get understanding perhaps what all that meant.

But the first encounter with the risen lord being one of knowing the lord's forgiveness for the ways that they had denied him the ways that had betrayed him.

And the wasted run away from him rather than staying with during the horrible hours and days.

Forgiveness and his peace.

But that forgiveness that the lord extended to them was not only given to them as a gift, but it was always inviting them to share in his very mission.

Of forgiveness and peace.

In bringing those gifts to this world.

How badly we know to this day how much our world all peoples need that powerful gift the divine forgiveness.

And divine peace.

That we learn more and more how to put that into action and how to bring that forgiveness to the world.

In our basic job descriptions baptized christians we share the lord's mission of reconciliation and forgiveness.

And so pentecost is not one time event.

It's a process.

A continual process and again to this day as you and i grow in their faith and grow in our relationship with the lord and are getting it what means to be forgiven.

And how to assure that in all the possibilities of what that means of being instruments or sharers for the lord is real presence in the world through us to bring about the kingdom of god.

That kingdom forgiveness and peace.

And so it means that pentecost reminding us that we are willing to be led by the holy spirit.

Putting our lives in the spirits hand.

Kind of puts aside our eagle centricity a fancy word but sometimes we get so absorbed in ourselves and our own agendas even think we can accomplish and everything all by ourselves perhaps into a certain extent but how much more specially in the business of forgiveness and peace.

I think we need that divine grace and that divine power in our own lives.

Were the first steps is for us to know that each one of us is beloved of god.

That's a great reminder.

On this pentecost day over and over again god is madly in love with each one of us.

And wanting to more deeply be a part of our lives and that love is the lord who is always ready to forgive us when we misstep when we sin.

In meeting us right there with a powerful grace to just keep growing and now allow that again the process of the holy spirit working within us to enable us to more effectively become the body of christ the very children of god.

A second step of this process of pentecost is that again we allow ourselves to be agents of forgiveness for others.

Maybe sometimes it's teaching other people what forgiveness is about.

And how to do that.

But how to practice that more and more effectively.

Again in our families and our marriages in our schools and our communities again that key need of forgiveness.

It is so apparent but also it's also very possible.

That's why sometimes we might think some things in our lives are impossible.

Remember is the lord himself says nothing is impossible.

With god.

And so may this pentecost be an empowerment refreshment of the holy spirit at each one of our lives and a very powerful prayer both basic to us all time and time again come holy spirit.

And trust that the spirit comes.

So we profess our faith all: i believe in one god, the father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one lord jesus christ, the only begotten son of god, born of the father before all ages.

God from god, light from light, true god from true god, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the father; through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the holy spirit, the lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the father and the son, who with the father and the son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic church.

I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.

Amen.

Gathered in christ name empowered by the holy spirit we humbly present our petitions to our father.
