We talk some people prefer dogs.

Others prefer cats... then there are some people have more of an exotic taste in pets.

But how does a pet owner take care of their snake or parrot when it gets sick?

Our cash matlock spoke with experts in the animal and medical fields to find out more..

Dr. karen emerson specializes in treating exotic animals.

On a daily basis she sees everything from snakes, to porcupines, and even parrots.

And at least once a week she has to call for special medication.

"like this is an albino pytho that's here, and he has a mouth infection.

So, he's going to have to go on an antibiotic, so we'll probably start out with an injectable antibiotic and we actually have an oral antibiotic that i'm going to show the owner that is flavored how to give him by mouth."

But emerson says you can't find a small enough dosage of antibiotic at a commercial pharmacy like walmart or walgreens.

She says she needs compounded medicine, which in west point, can only be found in one place.

"it's definitely special to you local pharmacy.

I know that a lot of your big retail chains don't do any kind of compounding at all, even for people."

"i see stuff that's only like 6 grams. you know, that has to have a very low dose of a medication, so it has to be specially compounded in order for us to get the correct amount of antibiotic or painkiller in that animal."

And emerson says sometimes she even gets the pharmacist to mix the medication with a custom flavor for your pet.

"believe it or not, bana is really big hit.

We also use any other kind of fruit, strawberry, apple, grape.

We do have flavors that are just animal specific, like gooey molasses, and of course you have beef and tuna which never smell great to us, but the animals really like."

"it's a wonderful thing to hav your local compounding pharmacist and be able to talk to that pharmacist and let them know what you're trying to achieve.

It's hard to tell them, well i've got a snake, you know, what flavor do i need?

And have that person on the other line that's actually going to work with you and care enough to get that.

Just like when you need it, so the pet owner can go home and give their snake that beef flavor or chicken flavor medication and the snake not try to bite them."

Compounding medicine doesn't require pharmacists to have a special license, however, not many pharmacies offer the service.

This is something both animal and medical experts say needs to change.

"it just takes time and patienc and little understanding of what humans can have and what pets can not."

"without compoundin pharmacies in exotic medicine, i would not be able to practice medicine like i want to, and exotic animals wouldn't get well."

Take vo in monitor emerson also says sometimes exotic animals don't show signs of needing professional medical attention until they are extremely sick.

Stinger the west lowndes panthers enter 2019 with something to prove... our second stop on the high stop number two features the west lowndes panthers... head coach anthony king leads the way for the panthers...as they look to claw their way into to the postseason "i'm trying to get them in th weight room...get better."

Get better.

That's the goal for the west lowndes panthers as they prepare for the 2019 season.

Coming off a 2 win season, head coach anthony king says the team will rely on a veteran offensive line and the team hopes their hard work this offseason can propel them to take the next step.

"pretty good size.

Could b stronger but we're going to try to run behind those guys."

"win games.

Make it to t it to th playoffs and hopefully win a gold ball.: "we've been in the weight roo working out.

Trying to get better and win a state championship one time for my last ride."

The work the panthers are putting in this offseason will definitely be put to the test as they are set to compete in the toughest region in 1a which features french camp, hamilton, noxapater, okolona, smithville, tcps, vardaman and reigning state champs nanih waiya.

"the mindset this year reall has been to comeback in the weightroom and get back stronger.

Being prepared mentally and physically on the field.

This year we're in a harder district so we have to be ready for those games."

"it's gonna be very toug competing in this division when you have nanih waiya and smithville in the same district.

Got noxapater who's really good and vardaman.

It's gonna be a tough district to come out of."

"we're small but we're hopin our toughness and determination out competes theirs."

West lowndes returns do it all athlete and d-1 prospect qua sanders and senior offensive lineman tyler bridges.

Both are confident that their experience they bring will help lead this young bunch.

"this year we have a prett young team in a lot of areas so with me being a senior and having a lot of playing time last year, i'm just going to step up and take on that leadership role for them and take them to the right direction."

"just to come out here and pu in work to help the little kids like the 9th and 10th graders here.

Help them to lead by example."

With a successful season, head coach king feels like the panthers can lay to rest the stigma of west lowndes being only a basketball school.

"west lowndes is considered basketball school.

We have to try to convince guys to come out and lift weights and do all the things we need to do.

But the main thing is we're going to try to turn it into a basketball and football school."

Reporting from west lowndes, chris bolton.
