Protesters Occupy Hong Kong Legislative Building Chamber, Covering Walls in Graffiti

Protesters in Hong Kong occupied the city’s Legislative Council building on July 1, smashing glass, vandalizing the building’s interior and clashing with riot police, according to the South China Morning Post.

This footage shows protesters congregating in the main debating chamber of the Legislative Council.

Fernando Cheung, a local pro-democracy Labour Party lawmaker, can be seen speaking to the press.

Cheung said the protesters had walked into a trap set by police – who he alleged could have stopped the protesters earlier – to turn public sentiment against them, according to RTHK.

Hong Kong protests against the controversial bill that would allow fugitives to be extradited to mainland China reignited on Monday, July 1, on the 22nd anniversary of the handover of the former British colony to China.
