'They were heroes,' Pence says of Apollo astronauts

"We honor these men today and American will always honor our Apollo astronauts," Pence said Saturday, the anniversary of the lunar landing.

"They were heroes." It was 50 years ago to the day this past Tuesday (July 16) that astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Mike Collins were launched into space atop a Saturn 5 rocket from Florida's Kennedy Space Center.

The astronauts then reached the moon four days later with Armstrong and Aldrin taking the first steps on the moon.
