WCBI NEWS AT SIX - JULY 24, 2019

Good night.

Good evening.

Thanks for joing us.

We're learning new details about the circumstances surrounding the deadly shooting of a columbus teenager.

17-year-old curtis lathan was arrested yesterday and charged with murder.

A judge denied him bond.

Lathan is being charged as an adult.

Wcbi's scott martin spoke with columbus police chief fred shelton and has the latest... this deadly shooting has shaken many here in columbus.

Arylkah white was shot and killed outside of a birthday party being held at the propst park community activity center this past saturday.

I just spoke with police chief fred shelton who says it's a devastating case.

Investigators remain tight lipped trying to keep their integrity of the investigation.

Multiple sources tell us a security guard was at the party when an argument broke out.

Those same sources say the security guard fired rounds in the air to break up a fight.

Chief shelton says when they arrived there was no on in any security gear.

However he did say there was a large disturbance they were responding to at the park.

17 year old curtis lathan is believed to have fired a gun after hearing other shots and one bullet hit white.

Investigators believe white was an innocent bystander.

"from this what we're doing i again, talking about implementing measures to make sure nothing like this ever happens again.

I'm requesting if a city facility is rented, that they give the police dpt a copy of the application so we'll know who is renting it and what type of event they're having.

If it's event that we feel causes concern we'll ask the renter to not have it or we'll go down there and if it's out of control or illegal activity is happening, we'll ask them to shut it."

The city has asked for copies of applications before but chief shelton tell us in this case, they didn't ask for a copy of who was renting out the propst park community activity center.

We've submitted a freedom of info request to the the city to see who rented the building.

Chief shelton says he expects more arrests and that one other person who was the party has been cited for firing a weapon in city limits.

City ordinance prohibits carrying firearms inside recreational facilities & community centers by private citzizens unless other wise approved by council or if the person has a conceal carry permit.

Centred up an update tonight... on the deadly eight- person accident that happened last month in kemper county.

A federal report says a box truck crossed the center line and hit the van.

Eight passengers in that van died at the scene.

They were not wearing seatbelts.

Investigators say the van was owned by columbus based sharp forestry.

It was on the way to monroeville, alabama.

The driver of that van was given a ticket for not having a driver's license.

The truck was owned by overnight parts alliance, based in birmingham.

If you're driving through amory, you may want to pay extra attention to the road and your speedometer..

Police are stepping up patrols..

Allie martin tells us why, and has a look at the results..

Amory police officer matt flippo is parked along hatley road, running radar in clear view of motorists.

Nats amory police chief ronnie bowen says his department has received a high number of complaints about people driving well above the 30 mile an hour posted speed limit along hatley road, and other residential areas in the city.

The chief posted a warning on facebook that officers would be conducting increased patrols in the problem areas.

"we issued the notice we wer going out to start cracking down on speeding violators."

Chief bowen says the stepped up enforcement is making a difference.

Last week, there were 23 tickets written for speeding.

The chief says during a typical week, six to seven speeding citations are written.

"speeding is not a big problem unless it;s in front of your house and your kids are playing and you're concerned about their safety.

So, what we do is out of respect for others, obey speed law, especially through residential areas, we have some thoroughfares but there's houses all along those streets in the city."

Standup bridge amory schools start back in a couple of weeks.

Chief bowen is hopeful the stepped up patrols will have a positive impact when students start back to school.

"we're fixing to introduc school buses into traffic flow in mornings and evenings, kids getting out, we don't want a tragedy, we are going to not only continue to look at speeding real close, especially school zones, there are 15 mile an hour school zones.

" chief bowen says the increased patrols will continue as long as they are need.

In amory, allie martin, wcbi news chief bowen also points out that all of the traffic details will involve marked units, in plain view of motorists.

Last year, with the fumbles and all, it caused us to lose.

We just take that, work harder, to not make those mistakes again."
