Local mothers react to paid family leave act

9 news at 6" this morning... governor kate brown signed a bill that gives oregon workers paid time off for family and medical leave.

Thanks for joining us, i'm matt templeman.

And i'm jillian smukler, in for renee mcullough.

This bill will give workers up to 12 weeks off of work...and recieve 100% of the wages they missed while they were gone.

Kezi 9 news reporter evita garza spoke with mothers about the new law....and they say it's exactly what new mothers need.

Taylor smith gave birth to her daughter avery over a year ago.

She tells me she was on maternity leave for two months... but she wishes she'd had more time.

"it was hard because i love my job so much...but i love her obviously."

Now that house bill 2005 has been signed into law... new mothers on maternity leave can get up to three months of paid leave.

It also applies to workers who need to care for severely ill family members.

Or people recovering from an illness.

Evita: "according to house bill 2005, the paid leave would be similar to workers compensation...which would make employers contribute wages to a state-wide insurance fund."

Employers with more than 25 workers will now pay sixty percent of the insurance premium...and employees will have to cover the remaining forty percent.

Business with less than 25 employees...won't have to contribute anything.

I spoke to some local businesses today...and while many support the bill... they say it may be harder to hire women --- even though gender discrimination is illegal.

Other mothers i spoke to say this bill is important for new mothers...especially those who struggle finacially and need time to adjust to motherhood.

"they need time to bond with their babies.

I know my mom had to go back to work when my bother was just two weeks old and i can't imagine that because you're not healed yet at that point."

The bill will also give victims of domestic abuse paid time off ---- no matter what the situation.

"i think allowing moms to be with their children for that amount of time is so beneficial to them and beneficial to the moms to get that time."

But at the end of the day... smith says it's all about getting that time with her newborn.

Reporting in eugene, evita garza kezi 9 news.
