Epstein May Have Gamed System From Beyond Grave
(Newser) – The will that Jeffrey Epstein signed just two days before his jailhouse suicide puts more than $577 million in assets into a trust fund that could make it more difficult for his dozens of accusers to collect damages, the AP reports.
The discovery of the will with its newly created 1953 Trust, named after the year of his birth, instantly raised suspicions he did it to hide money from the many women who say he sexually abused them when they were teenagers.
Ghislaine Maxwell's lawyers told a judge on Friday that Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein weren't terribly close. According to Newser, they made the statement in asking a judge to free her on a $5 million bond. Maxwell was arrested last week in New Hampshire. Prosecutors say Maxwell, 58, helped Epstein recruit, groom, and sexually abuse girls for years. Her lawyers told the court their client denies the charges, saying, 'Ghislaine Maxwell is not Jeffrey Epstein.
(Newser) – Two police officers were shot and killed Saturday by a suspect who later fatally shot himself in a South Texas border town after responding to a domestic disturbance call, authorities said. McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez identified the slain officers as Edelmiro Garza, 45, and Ismael Chavez, 39. “We have lost two brave public servants who sought only to keep peace in our city," Rodriguez, visibly distraught, told the McAllen Monitor.
Bus drivers in southwest France are refusing to work after one of their own was violently attacked while on the job Sunday night. Newser reports the driver, a man in his 50s, was attacked by a group of passengers in Bayonne. He suffered severe head injuries after he reportedly refused to let them board without tickets and face masks. The man has now been declared brain dead. Five suspects were arrested Monday. Masks are required on all public transportation in the country.
An off-duty police officer in Del City, Oklahoma, opened fire on a Walmart customer who allegedly shoplifted. Newser reports the Langston University cop struggled with the suspect, who appeared to have stolen a BBQ grill. As the suspect began to back up his vehicle, the officer drew his firearm and shot off at least eleven rounds. The shoplifting suspect was said to be hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition.
A young woman is dead after being hit by a man who drove his car onto a closed Seattle freeway and into a crowd protesting police brutality. Summer Taylor, 24, of Seattle, died Saturday evening at Harborview Medical Center. According to Newser, Dawit Kelete also hit 32-year-old Diaz Love, of Portland, Oregon, in the incident. Kelete hit both of them when his car barreled through a panicked crowd of protesters on Interstate 5 early Saturday morning.
