Boat engulfed in flames on River Thames

This is the dramatic moment a boat is engulfed in flames shortly after "exploding" on the River Thames.

Eight passengers on board the 20ft river cruiser were forced to abandon ship and jump into the water near Twickenham, south west London.

Eyewitness Christian Fahey watched the drama unfold during an afternoon stroll with his two-year-old daughter Willow at 3pm on Saturday (Sept 21).

Footage captured on his mobile phone shows thick black smoke and flames pouring into the sky.

Chistian, a lawyer, said: "I heard a loud bang, turned around to see what it was and saw people jumping into the water.

"Initially I was shocked by the explosion and then concerned for the people onboard.

"They were scrambling around and clearly very panicked.

"Two people jumped in the water first and they were screaming at the others to leave the boat.

"By this point it was out of control.

"The flames were really bad and the smoke was thick and black.

It burnt out completely." Those who abandoned ship were rescued from the water by a passing private boat.

The vessel was completely destroyed and left smouldering on the river bank.

Both the London Fire Brigade and the London Ambulance Service were called to the scene, shortly after 3pm, and the blaze was under control at around 4.40pm.

Three people suffered minor injuries in the incident and one person was taken to hospital.

Dad-of-two Christian added: "We were just out for a pleasant stroll when it happened.

I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

"It's not what you expect to see, that's for sure.

"It was a lovely, peaceful afternoon until that happened.

The next thing you know, people are jumping into the water and the boat is on fire." Metropolitan Police were called to the scene to assist firefighters.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: 'We were called at 3.16pm on September 21 to Orleans Road, Twickenham, to reports of a fire on a boat on the River Thames.

'We dispatched a number of resources to the scene including two incident response officers, an advanced paramedic and our hazardous area response team (HART).

'We assessed three people with minor injuries and took one to hospital.'
