Barcelona ramps up security ahead of royal family's visit

Spain has reinforced the riot police forces as Catalan separatist groups have called for demonstrations against the presence of the royal family in the city and against the imprisonment of pro-independence leaders.

Some residents in Barcelona said they don't like the Spanish royal visit while others said everyone should be free to go wherever they want.

Hundreds of Catalan separatist supporters staged a peacefully pot-banging protest on Sunday (October 3) outside the venue where the award ceremony will take place.

Barcelona has witnessed a series of pro-secession protests since October 14 when Spain's Supreme Court sentenced nine politicians and activists to up to 13 years in jail for their role in a failed independence bid in 2017.
