He made the ultimate sacrifice while working to serve and protect.

Hundreds of people filled mayfair church of christ today to celebrate the life of a hero.

At officer billy clardy the iii's service, close friends and co- workers gave us more insight into the type of man he was.

22:05:28- first and foremost, billy was a beloved son, brother, husband, father and grandfather.

Mayor tommy battle said he did first ride along as mayor with officer clardy.

He was visibly emotional as he described clardy's work with the homeless.

<25:33:09 - he went out and he made a whole booklet of each of the homeless and he had their picture in there.

25:52:24 not many people would do that.

That meant that he had to go out there in the camps and actually talk to people and have that conversation with them and get to know them.

We heard from the police chief.

He revealed that clardy's personnel file tells the story of an exceptional officer.

Clardy had a lot medals for his accomplishments but he didn't wear them on his uniform out of humility.

Officer clardy joined the huntsville police department in 2005 after serving in the military.

He was exchange officer of the year for making 178 drug arrests.

32:38:07 -what a trail of paperwork we uncovered.

This trail documents a history of commitment, self sacrifice, accomplishments and it tells a story of a person driven by integrity, courage, professionalism and knowledge.

The very words of a huntsville police officer is in his personnel file.

Snow and rain fell all day -- but it didn't stop people from lining the streets for officer clardy's funeral procession.... adults and children saluted the mourning officers as they made their way to maple hill cemetery.

You could see flashing police lights for miles as the officer's cars traveled from may-fair church of christ to the maple hill cemetery.

Officer clardy.was laid to rest at the same cemetery as his father - a huntsville police officer who was killed in the line of duty in 1978.

Officer clardy leaves behind a wife, 5 children and several grandchildren to cherish his memory.> we spoke to multiple people that braved the cold to show their support for officer clardy and his family.

One neighbor told us she was there to show them something - she beleives - they don't receive enough of.

"because there's not enough support for our law enforcement as it is, and we need to let them know that we love them, and we'll do whatever we need to to help keep
