President Donald Trump on Thursday said that he ordered the killing of Iran's top general because Iranians "were looking to blow up our embassy."

"I will say this, we caught a total monster," Trump said of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a U.S. drone attack in Baghdad on Jan.

"That should have happened a long time ago.

We did it because they were looking to blow up our embassy.

We also did it for other reasons that were very obvious." When asked if he would seek Congressional approval for further actions against Iran, Trump said it would all depend on the circumstance.

"I don't have to.

And you shouldn't have to, because you have to make split second decisions in certain cases," Trump said.

"I wouldn't even mind doing it."
