Hailstones as big as golf balls ripped through Canberra, causing damage to properties and cars.

Severe weather brought unusual hailstorms to Australia's capital on Monday (January 20).

Ground outside the country's parliament was left with a blanket of white ice and car windscreens were smashed after massive hailstones fell from the sky.

Australia's national weather agency had warned that thunderstorms were expected with damaging winds, large hail and bursts of heavy rainfall.

The country has been facing extreme weather recently, with drought-ravaged parts of rural Australia hit by dust storms and intense bushfires ravaging an area one-third the size of Germany and killing 29 people and millions of animals.
