50 People Tell Us How To Greet Someone From Their State

We asked 50 people, one from each state, to tell us how folks greet one another where they're from.

From "howdy, y'all" to "howyoudoin", it's wild how many ways one country can say hello.

- People in Georgia say "Hey y'all!""Why don't ya come in, come on down here!""How y'all doin'?"Even if it's one person."Come on down here!"[upbeat music]- Nevadans just greeteach other with hello. Not super exciting.- Hi, hello.- We say hi.- Hi, hola.- I would say a simple hello.- Hello.- Hello, there's no howdy or anything.- You catch a howdy every once in a while.- Howdy, y'all!- I mean it really depends on who you are,so it's either howdy or what's up.- What's up!

[laughing]And it's always witha hand shake or a hug.- With a hug.- Hugs.- Hugs, lots of hugs.- Depending on your comfort level,I'd say hugs for the most part, even if you're a stranger.- Very huggy with anybody they know. And anybody they don't,it's kind of just a hello.- A warm hug or and embrace.Sometimes we throw the shaka, what's up, what's up?- I greet each other likeyo, what's up, howdy, how you doing, what's up bro.- A friendly hello and or high five.- Be like hey dude, what's up man.- It's like very low key,it's not very cool or anything like that, you don't really want to show an emotion, that you're excited to see them. You're not going to say that I'm reallydisappointed to see you either,it's just very like what's up, man.- I think most people just say hey.- Hey.- Oh, hey.- Hey.- [together] Hey y'all.- Oh hey there!- Yo!- What's up?- Hey, how's it going, what's up, you know.- Ladies, gentlemen, what's going on,fly guys, fly girls, players, playettes, you know whatever you want to say, it getsit gets spread out.- It's a lot of like Hey, 'cause when yousee somebody from far awaybut you know who they are.'Cause there's not very many of us.- They say hi and how are you and justkeep on walking.- How's it going?- There's a little bit of the syrupy, southernish, chit-chat.- People smile, people are friendly. You pass someone on thestreet, they're probablygoing to say hi to you.- There's generally a bitmore of a conversationthan just hi how are you- A lot of times youmight have a 10 minuteconversation with a stranger- Imagine you're likeat the grocery store, you're at Kroger, and you see your friend,ah, hey girl, oh it's beenway too long, oh my Lord, girl, it is so good to seeyou, you look fabulous,we totally need to catchup, okay, yeah, okay,we need to catch up, aha, love you, you do look great.- Some people say Oh how you making it,how's your mom and them.- We say how's your mom and 'nem?- Hi, y'all!

Let me hug your neck.- Hey, y'all. How's it goin'?Doin' okay?Great, love it.- Hey now. There's a now afterthat, yeah, or hey hun.- Definitely people say bud.- Somehow the phrase yaknow is attached to it.Hi how are ya doing, ya know?- One thing that Utahns always say is op.Like when you bump into someone in public, you're just like op.- My absolute favoritegreeting that a Nebraskanwill give to anotherNebraskan, and it's superslight and subtle, but it means the world,if you happen to bepassing somebody in anothervehicle, if you get a one finger salute, that is the most genuinegreeting you can get.
