South Africa refugees prohibited from interfering with officials after being defeated in court

Refugees living in and around the Central Methodist Church in Cape Town are now prohibited from interfering with city officials in the execution of their duties in terms of an order granted by Judge Daniel Thulare in the Western Cape High Court.

The refugees have been holed up in the Central Methodist Church ever since being forcibly evicted by police from the UNHCR offices in October 2019.

The order also forces the refugees to adhere to the municipal bylaws on the area around Greenmarket Square.

Judge Thulare also ordered the Department of Home Affairs to within 7 days provide a venue to process the asylum seekers and for the City to aid those in distress.

This footage was filmed on February 17.
