A bill currently making its way through the alabama legislature wants to keep an electronic eye on inmates who are on work release.

From the start of 2019 until now, at least a 11 people have walked off from work release sites around north alabama.

Some of them with violent records.

As waay 31's will robinson-smith explains, a local legislator hopes his bill can stop some of these cases from happening.

Tristain moore is optimistic about a new bill targeting violent offenders given the opportunity for work release.

Senator arthur orr says the bill was crafted after seeing several inmates leave their work sites over the course of the past few years.

His bill proposes electronically monitoring those inmates with ankle monitors.

Arthur orr, i think it gives the public a greater assurance that they're not going to be done any harm by criminals.

Orr says the bill would cost about a million dollars per year from the department of corrections.

But it would help reduce time and resources if an inmate runs off.

Orr says right now, the bill would only impact state inmates, but says it could be amended to include those in
