A federal judge on Thursday said actress Lori Loughlin in October will be among eight parents accused of participating in a vast U.S. college admissions bribery and fraud scheme to face the first trial to result from the scandal.

Yahaira Jacquez reports.

Actress Lori Loughlin, one of the parents caught up in the 2019 college admissions scandal, will stand trial in October, along with her husband and six others.

The Hollywood star is accused of participating in a scheme - prosecutors say - that involved parents conspiring with a consultant to use bribery and other forms of fraud to get their children into the nation's top schools.

The "Full House" star and her fashion designer husband Mossimo Giannulli are among 15 parents fighting the charges brought by federal prosecutors, who allege the celebrity couple agreed to pay $500,000 in bribes to have their two daughters named as fake recruits to the University of Southern California crew team.

The admitted mastermind of the scandal, William Singer, pleaded guilty last March to charges he facilitated cheating on college exams and bribed sports coaches to classify his clients' kids as college recruits.

Ahead of Thursday's hearing, Loughlin's lawyers asked the judge to delay setting a trial date, citing "devastating" new evidence that - they say - supports the couple's claims that they believed their payments were legitimate donations that would go to the university, not bribes.

The trial begins October 5.
