Time when many businesses are struggling--- one local business owner came up with a way to still stay open and keep his employees working.

Action news now reporter karen alvarez shows us how.

John dix, is c-e-o of from the hearth bakery and caé.

He tells me he was scrambling to find ways to keep his business alive---that's when he got an idea.

Sot(john dix, c.e.o of from the hearth): delivering groceries is actually a lot easier than cooking food, so we're having a good time doing it.

John says he never thought he'd be running a virtual grocery store.

Sot(john dix, ceo of from the hearth bakery and caé): well last week was the hardest day of our life, we had to lay off 40 employees and so i was laying awake that night thinking how do i get my employees back?

That's when he realized that he had all the essentials ingredients - to launch an online grocery service.

Sot: the next morning, my team got together and in 48 hours we created an online grocery store.

Standup: so how does it work?

All you do is go to our fthcafe.com, click the things you want, and pay online.

From spring mix, to carrots, to apples, bannans, rice and corn& dix says this service is a way to help his community in need.

Sot(john dix, ceo of from the hearth bakery and caé): well there's a lot of people in the community right now that don't feel safe.

They want to stay at home and this is a service that allows them to do that.

Sot(mervi hentila, lives in redding): it's a really good idea!

We have to eat and then we don't have to exclude some of these special shops and restaurants.

And still keep his employees on payroll.

Sot: we have at least two-thirds of them back and we're expanding hours next week and i think we'll be able to bring all of them back.

Sot(john dix, ceo of from the hearth bakery and caé): you know, about 18 months ago we had a tragic fire here&we were stronger than carr and we are stronger than corona.

Sot(mervi hentila, lives in redding): support local businesses and small business is very important at this time!

Because they are really big part of our economy, local economy, and even the whole country's economy and we want to keep people working so they can pay their bills and feed their families.

As to whether he'll keep the virtual store permanently?

Sot: you know, we'll take it one day at a time.

Dix tells me they have brought in a lot of local vendors to join and be feature their products online.
