The singer spoke to cbs this morning about why he said yes when the mayor of milan invited him to perform and why he doesn't consider it a concert.

Ava maria the acclaimed italian tenor sang inside the duomo , the historic cathedral in hard- hit milan that is closed because of the coronovirus pandemic.

Music is very important for the soul on cbs this morning, bocelli said the live performance -- streamed on youtube -- was a prayer not a concert.

In this moment the only important thing is to pray to resolve as soon as possible this incredible problem there was no audience in the cathedral because of social distancing& something bocelli called painful.

Singing i thought to the people that yesterday would have been in the church and instead they had to stay at home suffering many of them suffering so my thoughts were for them.

Through his foundation, bocelli has been raising money for hospitals and protective equipment.

His message to everyone is not to lose hope.
