Moment a dopey dad nearly caused massive blaze by pouring petrol on a BBQ - but was saved by his quick thinking partner's BEER.John Paul Brophy, 53, said he was having a family BBQ last Friday and he thought it would be a good idea to speed up the cooking process. Pouring a petrol can freely over the open flame caused an inferno to flare up, catching the petrol can alight.Fearing an explosion, John quickly screwed the cap back on to reduce oxygen flow but the flames were still burning.Partner Fiona Bain, a carer, then put out the flames calmly - with her open bottle of Budweiser.Lorry driver John said: "We had a BBQ going and lit the fire.

It never took so I tried to add a little bit of help. "I really don't know what I was thinking at that moment.

I'm quite a calm person.

I just thought to get the oxygen away from the fuel."Thankfully Fiona was there.

I think she was annoyed because she lost her beer!"John, from Edinburgh, said he wasn't injured and just "lost a few hairs" from the incident. He said: "I think it was a bit of an idiotic move.

There was a bit of alcohol involved - it wasn't a straight-minded thought. "I was sponsored by Merlot that evening.

I reckon I'd had about three quarters of a bottle.

Fiona reckons it might have been two bottles."Stepdaughter Iona McBain, 20, a dental nurse was filming the whole time and decided to upload the clip to video-sharing website TikTok.John said: "Iona only downloaded TikTok because she was bored during the lockdown. "She said it got six million views on TikTok in a day. "Some of the comments are hilarious, mostly saying I'm an idiot and thank god for Fiona."
