Engineers from Ferrari's Formula 1 team have teamed up with the Italian Institute of Technology to develop a ventilator in just five weeks.

Lauren Anthony reports.

Speed is a word Ferrari knows all too well.

And now, engineers from its Formula 1 team have joined forces with the Italian Institute of Technology to develop a better ventilator - in just five weeks.

It will be called the FI5 - taking its name from both organizations and the entire time spent to produce a fully functioning prototype from start to finish.

Project manager Dr Marco Maggiali says the device is able to optimize oxygen consumption, and can be used with various head masks.

"One of the peculiarities of this device is that it is capable to work with not only the standard non-invasive mask but also with full face masks and helmets.

Those two are particularly comfortable for the patient and in order to work with these kind of devices we designed a particular control algorithm to control the amount of CO2 that is inside these masks." Ferrari engineers designed the pneumatic and mechanical parts.

Where IIT designed the electronics, firmware and control software.

Ferrari said the first prototype was assembled last week at IIT headquarters - and it passed all functionality tests.
