COVID-19: Teachers in Jaipur turn as MGNREGA labourers amid pandemic

Amid coronavirus pandemic, many teachers have lost their job in Rajasthan's Jaipur.

Earlier, all those who used to work as a teacher at a private school are now working as labourers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme.

They are now earning around Rs 200 per day as labourer.

While speaking to ANI, a teacher turned labourer, Ramavtar Singh said, "Due to COVID-19, many teachers like us who used to earn around Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 are now working here.

Schools have been closed so we applied here." "Working under this scheme has given us relief at this time of distress and we are thankful to the state government for this," he added.

"I used to earn Rs 20,000 per month and now I earn Rs 235 per day that sums up to Rs 7,050 per month," Ramavtar Singh further stated.

7703 confirmed COVID-19 cases have been reported in Rajasthan.
