Kim Jong-un appears on video after mysteriously disappearing for weeks

Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un chaired a meeting of the Politburo of North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party.

In a rare video appearance, Kim seems to be socially distancing from the other members of the Politburo, but no one sitting at the large table is wearing a face covering.

Although officials had gathered to discuss the economy and living conditions, the state media report about the meeting made no mention of the coronavirus pandemic.

North Korean authorities insist that the country has no confirmed cases of Covid-19, despite intelligence sources from neighbouring South Korea saying that an outbreak in the Communist country cannot be ruled out.

Rumours have circulated widely about the state of health of Kim, who mysteriously vanished for several weeks, before finally making an appearance at the official opening of a fertiliser factory at the start of May.

The number of outings of the North Korean leader have been unusually small in the past few months.
