Statues being viewed as symbols of hate and oppression are being vandalized and removed from areas across the nation.

At the intersection of the memorial parkway and mohawk street in utica.

Newschannel 2's kirk tupaj tells us what the motivation is behind the movement.

Former utica native mariesa cozza has started an on-line petition to remove utica's statue of christopher columbus.

The petition comes in the wake of columbus statues across the country being vandalized and removed as symbols of hate and oppression.

Cozza's petition states: "we believe it is high time that the city of utica is more inclusive of the original inhabitants of upstate new york, indigenous people who were massacred by colonizers like columbus."

Utica's mayor was not willing to comment on the issue today, but republican congressional candidate claudia tenney sent a release stating: "judging historical figures through the lens of 21st century cultural norms is a cheap political attack aimed at erasing history&.although columbus may not be viewed as perfect by today's standards, his contributions to world history should not be canceled by the removal of a statue in utica recognizing his noteworthy achievements."

Cozza's petition now has over 800 signatures, but the veteran's outreach center's executive director vincent scalise has started a petition to keep the monument.

None sot: vincent scalise, executive director veteran's outreach center i don't believe in this movement to erase history from our country.

I feel like it's a movement that's following from extremists from the middle east.

Sot: kirk tupaj it's too early to tell whether the petition to remove the statue will ever see any action, but if it does get taken down, expect to see it relocated rather than destroyed.

Sot: vincent scalise, executive director veteran's outreach center if they decide to get rid of it, i'm offering up my personal services to take the statue, buy a private piece of property within the city of utica to have it permanently stationed there, and i'll pay the taxes on the property, and i'll keep it going because i am dead set against this totalitarian antifa movement to erase different points of view.

Find out what the president of the utica common council has to say about the action to remove the statue tonight at six.

In utica, i'm kirk tupaj reporting for newschannel 2.
