Lane County reported that coronavirus cases amongst college-aged young adults are on a sharp increase due to house parties and other large gatherings.

Tonight.

We begin with kezi 9 news reporter chris luenburg -- who's live near the university of oregon campus to explain how college-aged students are a contributing factor to the disturbing trend we've been seeing here in lane county.

Chris?

42 college aged individuals in our area have tested positive for the virus-- and officials are pointing to three different clusters that all center around house parties-- which is why officials are asking college students to put down the party cups, and pick up a mask.

Even more disturbing-- some of those college aged cases have been in contact with as many as 28*other people-- and around half of those contacts have developed covid-19.

I spoke with a uo grad student who says the large majority of grads and undergrads are taking this seriously-- but still, he's aware that parties are going on.

At least through social media, i've seen a lot of different events happening.

A lot of people are out.

And if you drive through the residential areas at night you can hear a lot of parties going on."

Officials say the latest cluster of college-aged cases are connected to a four-day party that took place in seaside.

And u-o says there are now 22 cases among their students.

At 6, hear from public health officials about where else these college-aged cases are coming from.

Reporting live in eugene, chris lueneburg kezi 9 news.
