A drunk man was rescued after spending the night sleeping in a muddy sewer.

Pattarachote Maneenil, 22, sparked concern when he visited his sister on Saturday night (July 4) then disappeared from her apartment.

His relative Ruechuchart Maneenil, 25, called police to report her brother as missing in Samut Prakan, central Thailand.

She said her brother had been drunk and she was worried about problems he was having with friends.

She said: "My brother looked worried and he was rambling about people wanting to get him.

He was drunk I didn't take it seriously and let him stay in the room but when I came back from the toilet he had already gone." Ruechuchart went out looking for him after she saw that the tree branches outside her window were broken and thought that her brother might have climbed out and fallen into the canal.

However, she could not find her brother and after spending several hours looking for him so she went to the police.

Officers contacted the local voluntary rescue team and police also began searching for him during their patrols.

The following morning (July 5), as Ruechuchart was riding a motorcycle back to her apartment she heard a call from her brother.

She stopped the motorcycle and looked around before finding him stuck in the thick mud under a wall opposite her home.

The worried sister was relieved and called the rescuers to help her pull her brother out from the hole, which connects to a sewer.

He told the police he was drunk and had spent the night hiding there as he believed that his friends were looking for him after they had a falling out.

Police released the man without him being arrested and let him go home with his sister to have a wash.
